Culture in the community – Curzon Cinema
So here we are in the Curzon Cinema, one of the oldest purpose built continually running… cinemas in the country. It was built in 1912 originally by Victor Cox who was a great local entrepreneur. When you visit the Curzon, you do feel this celebration of cinema; … cinema heritage, technology and nostalgia for going to the pictures. The passion, and love I guess that people have for this place is incredible. We have over 80 volunteers now that will do absolutely anything just because of their love of the Curzon. I’ve been here 19 years as a volunteer. We have soul. It’s seen many generations through hard times. It’s kept a dream on the silver screen. When things were down with in the world for people. And that’s what films do. The loan from Triodos Bank enabled us to repair the warehouse which was in a bit of a poor state. And make that ready for the Loungers café builders to move in… and create this rather lovely restaurant
that we’ve got next door. In Clevedon, certainly in this part of town, there’s not a similar pub or café that has that… kind of vibrancy and excitement. We wanted to work with the community. We also have a community that’s very proud of this cinema. So we needed a bank that understood that, and we found Triodos, … and that was a very good match for us. It worked very very well indeed.
