Danny Elfman Teaches Music for Film | Official Trailer | MasterClass


The first time I was in
front of an orchestra hearing my own music, it’s
like, I want to do this. In the course of
this MasterClass, I’m going to tell you
from my perspective how I do these things. We’re going to talk
about instrumentation. We’re going to talk
about orchestration. We’re going to
talk about melody. We’re going to talk
about the tone. The most important thing you’re
going to capture in a film score is going to be the tone. One more time. Hearing the downbeat– bomm. When somebody starts
talking about this should be in such and such a
key because such a key feels that way, that’s bull****. You can turn any key
into anything you want. I use a device called Axe-Fx. Changing the size
of the amp, changing the size of the speaker,
distortion, overdrive, all night long tweaking,
tweaking, tweaking, tweaking knobs. If you’re able to find
something that stands out as an original
thing, you are going to find a fast ticket to
getting yourself more work. After a hundred and something
films, I’m constantly insecure, but here’s the hitch. It’s OK to fail,
to feel insecure, doubting yourself, finding
confidence and moving forward, and then doubting
what you’ve just done. I think this is the
life of a composer, and I think it’s the
life of an artist. If you’re really
going to succeed, there’s no other way but
by doing, making mistakes, and then learning from those
mistakes and moving on. If you take the time,
and you learn it, I promise you it’ll
serve you well. I’m Danny Elfman and

  1. Hopefully its a lot better than Hansโ€™. Hans didnโ€™t really teach anything in depth he just talked and talked about general stuff ๐Ÿ˜’

  2. Dont know what is the Zimmer hype. Elfman is far more interesting, mature, fresh, etc….So, dont give me that "taste" bullshit, Elfman is a level up.

  4. I showed this to my mother and within an hour I had an email from Masterclass saying I had a gift.. ๐ŸŽƒ๐Ÿฅฐ happiest Halloween ever. I've been waiting for insights from Danny Elfman in my journey of learning orchestration. Can't wait to get started tomorrow

  5. Oh wow. Yes. I haven't been compelled towards one of these until now. Elfman is such a special talent and freakishly intense in pursuit of his craft. I'm in on this one.

  6. Elfman may have some great scores before but now he's barely known for recent work. Hans Zimmer is the new thing, he's a modern composer and influencing a lot of other guys. You hear Hans Zimmer 2 or 3 times in a year. You probably hear Elfman on a Tim Burton film once in a while. Hans Zimmer is the face of modern film scoring because he believes and says in his masterclass that you don't need a lot to write a classic.

  7. Had a lot of respect for him till he scored Justice League. Sorry, but Batman hasn't had just "one theme". And it's certainly not yours. The least you could've done is continued what Zimmer and Junkie had started and kept the instrumentation similar.

  8. When I was young, I was bat crazy about being a composer/orchestrator/solo Cellist/Pianist/violinist! XD),
    that was over a decade ago, this would have probably changed the course of my life, maybe…
    I will still take this MasterClass because I love music, and as a filmmaker, understanding music in film is, crazy important.

  9. I was always a bigger fan of Elfman's more melancholic and subdue music scores, like Black Beauty, Dolores Claiborne, Extreme Measures, Hulk. He has a neck for creating emotional and moody scores. The man is a legend.
