How to Organize Photos Using The Container Store’s Picture Boxes

Hi everyone. It’s Alejandra. And I hope you
guys are having a fantastic Tuesday. By the time I post this video, it’s probably going
to be Wednesday. But anyways, I was brainstorming this morning on what type of videos to do
in the next few weeks and I know a lot of you guys have requested a certain topic for
a video like a toy room video or a garage video or like back to school, or I don’t know,
there had been a lot of ideas that have been thrown out there. And thank you so much for
requesting those videos. Some videos are hard to do. Toy room, I don’t
have kids so it’s kind of hard to find a toy room. I could go to my sister’s house. Maybe
I will do that. Garage, I don’t have a garage. I live in a condo. So again, I might have
to go to like my parent’s house or my sister’s house. So I do appreciate the ideas and I
am trying really hard to do all the topics that you guys suggest. So please, keep suggesting
videos and I promise I will get to them very soon. Anyways, OK. So this morning, I was thinking
of topics to do and one of the ones that I came up with was organizing your photos. I
haven’t done a video on it. I haven’t shown a product and I haven’t shown my system so
I thought I would do that today. So let me show you what I do that works really
well. It’s easy to maintain. It’s easy to find what you’re looking for if you’re showing
someone your photos. This is the system I use for all of my print photos. My digital
photos is a whole another video. I will consider doing that another time. But this is my print
photos and where I keep them. Basically, it’s a plastic clear photo box
that I got from The Container Store. I think it was like $11.99 or something. I will try
and post a link at the bottom if you are interested in this product. But inside of the photo box
are six mini photo boxes just like this. OK. So what I’ve done here is I’ve taken all of
the photos from around my house. So like any photo that wasn’t in a frame, that was just
like floating around in a drawer or in a file that didn’t really have a home, I took all
those pictures, put them in one pile, and then I sorted all the pictures by either event
or by year. And by year is kind of tricky if you have
a lot of photos because some photos don’t really have the year printed on the back and
sometimes you can’t really remember where it’s from and when it was taken. So organizing
it by event is a lot easier. So I have kind of done both. I remembered what year it was
so I’ve done both. OK. So for example, this one right here, it
has the name of my high school that I went to and then it has the year. So inside of
this one has all of my high school pictures and then the year they were taken. And I don’t
think I have that many high school pictures. So I think this is like all four years from
high school into this one thing. Again, it’s organized by category. It may not be exact
but it’s organized. And I’ve done the same thing with all the
other ones. So this was a trip to Miami in 2006. So I took the whole stack and put them
inside of one of these clear photo boxes, I labeled Miami on the front and then I put
the year down here. Again, if you don’t remember the year, just don’t put the year. Just put
the event. If you don’t have a label maker, it’s not
a problem. You could just grab like 2 to 3-inch piece of duct tape, masking tape or painter’s
tape. Put the piece of tape on the front of the photo box and then take a permanent marker
and then just label whatever your category is. OK. So once everything is sorted by category,
event, or year and they’re containerized inside of here then they all just go inside of this
photo box just like this. So one thing I would do differently if I was going to go back and
reorganize this or – I mean I can still do this but I’m probably not going to do this
because I don’t even look at photos that often. But one thing I would do differently is label
the top of these photo boxes up here as opposed to labeling the front because when you label
the top, you can just open this and then see immediately all your categories or all your
years or all your events or whatever your photos consist of. So anyways, this is how I organized all of
my photos. Again, they are sorted by category, event, year, they’re containerized, labeled,
and then I keep this box inside of my living room so if I want to show any of my friends
photos or want to reminisce, I know exactly where to go. I find exactly what I’m looking
for in less than 10 seconds. And the hardest part is like flipping through the stack of
photos and finding the exact one I want. So I will post a link to this product at the
bottom of the video and you can check it out if you like the idea and you’re looking to
organize all of your photos in a super easy way that’s going to save you time and cause
you less stress. All right. I will see you guys soon. Bye!

  1. I wish I lived within 4 hours of a container store…but I guess that's why I have online shopping! Could you do a video on how to organize jewelry? I don't have room for a jewelry armoire and I have a ton of jewelry that is getting dirty and tangled. Help!!!

  2. Love the idea, but what about the larger photos like 8×10. I have several from by daughter from taking her to the studio and I'm clueless on how to organize and store them. I don't want them to get distroyed and I know having them in the plastic bag they came in will someday distroy them. Any suggestions

  3. people would think you are so anal if you can literally pull out photos from a particular event in 10 seconds like immediatly after they ask about it hahaha…im not trying to be rude, i really like to be organised too and i love your vids! i think the digital photos one is a good idea!

  4. Yay !!!! I asked you on facebook to do a orginizing video on photos and you did it !!!! Thanks you so much!!!!! I'm a photographer and have sooooo many photos. Thanks so much for this great idea !

  5. I have an ottoman that has storage, how about organizing board games..The boxes they come with the edges are ripped, weak, etc. Monopoly money is everywhere, Chess and Checker pieces are in Ziploc bags. There has to be a better way. Just an idea.

  6. Love this video !!! I have tons of photos to orginize ! I am heading to get these boxes soon ! Please also do a digital of photo cd storage video. Thanks

  7. I just bought this container over the weekend and last night organized all my photos and labeled the TOP of each one (as you suggested you would do if you went back) LOVE IT and I just sometimes go look at it lol

  8. Hi! Just wondering wouldn't the photos stick to eachother if kept bunched up in thew box for long? Any tip for that please? Thanks πŸ™‚

  9. I just discovered your awesome channel… could you make a video of how to organize your movies and books? πŸ™‚ thankssss!! πŸ˜€

  10. I love your videos! I have gotten such great ideas, I wanted to know if you have any tips for larger photos, (the ones usually in frames…portrait types)?
    Thank you.

  11. Do you know if the plastic boxes are acid-free? I am organizing my parents photos and want to organize them in a way they will be easy to pass on. Thank you for all of your videos. They are wonderful.

  12. i LOVE that photo box, i have one! But guess what? i use mine to organize my makeup by brand or type! hehhe.. it PERFECTLY fits single size makeup items (anything not in a palette). So one box is single color eyeshadows, one for lipsticks, one for blushes etc. I have one that is just stuff from Bare Minerals too. The box can be used for more than just photos! πŸ™‚

  13. I use a little bigger version of this box to store my clear/ acrylic stamps by category (flowers, birthday, holiday, sentiments, etc) in my craft room

  14. This is a very good idea especially or older photos because those containers will keep the pictures very safe and free from dust and the elements!

  15. Well now they are waterproof. Thank goodness its all digital now! Sitting here scanning old photos and storing them while watching your vids. No more hard copy photos in my life, but still, there's all the old ones.

  16. First time here, you are adorable and thank you for all the time you have spent with these videos. You have motivated me!!!

  17. Hi Alejandra. I was wondering if you would know if they sell these in the UK. I have never seen anything like this. They are fabulous. I love all your videos and have implemented many of your ideas, you are great. I look forward to seeing more. Thank you πŸ™‚

  18. Nice post. One suggestion: before boxing old photos, scan 'em: whether for preservation, portability, or just for posting on Facebook or whatever. If scanning with a flatbed scanner is too difficult or time consuming, and scanning services too expensive, use iPhone, iPad or similar Android gizmos – my YouTube channel has a 2-minutes video showing how πŸ™‚

  19. Great video! Β And, I love your organizing tips. Β But, I fear my family and friends would lose the photos when they are out of the box. Β I may have to stick to the old photo album rule this time around.

  23. Please do your digital photo as that is much more necessary to our current lives as few people have print photos/take the time to print their photos anymore. Thank you!

  24. ok, I appreciate how organised this is but for me it would drive me insane..I am a bit particular when it comes to plastic, I want to have the least possible plastic in my house..I can see pictures only in photo albums honestly. If I don't feel a picture would fit my album I would rather throw it, because if I don't want to look at it then what's the point having it? x

  25. Hey Alejandra your videos are so amazing and inspirational!!!! I have been so inspired by your perfectionism and kindness and meticulousness. You're so amazing!!!! <3 <3 <3

And Alejandra, can you do a video on organizing yourself as a student studying abroad? Or in a mobile house other than the main house? That would be totally awesome!!!!

    Love you!!!!

  26. Hey Alejandra! You always say about your label maker. What exactly do you mean? Do you have a program for this? Please write soon…

  27. Great video! Super helpful and so simple. Thank you. Intro a little long but you motivated me to start on this overwhelming project.

  28. What a smart idea. I was always sick of heaps of photo albums, laying about. I'm going to get one of these.
