How to use your iPad as a second display for your Mac with Sidecar — Apple Support

Extend your workspace by using your iPad
as a second Mac display. Here’s how, with Sidecar
for macOS Catalina and iPadOS. We’ll show you
how to connect your devices and how to navigate
and use basic controls. Before you start, you should be running
macOS Catalina on your Mac and iPadOS on your iPad. Also, sign in to iCloud using the same Apple ID
on both your iPad and your Mac, and make sure both devices have Bluetooth
and Wi-Fi turned on. Sidecar is compatible
with Mac computers released in 2016 or later, and Apple Pencil-compatible
iPad models. Now let’s connect your devices. On your Mac, click the AirPlay icon
in your menu bar. You can also automatically
connect your Mac and iPad using a compatible cable, as long as your iPad
is a trusted device. Once connected, the Sidecar icon will replace
AirPlay in your Mac’s menu bar. We’re going to use our iPad
as an extended display, but you can switch
to a mirrored display by clicking the Sidecar icon. You can disconnect
your devices here in the Sidecar menu
as well. When Sidecar is active, you’ll use your Mac trackpad
or mouse to drag apps and documents
over to the iPad display. You can also use
your Apple Pencil to edit and mark up
on your iPad. The sidebar on your iPad features an additional
set of touch controls which you can use to bring up
your dock, keyboard, and more. You can tap the sidebar buttons with your finger
or Apple Pencil. You can also quickly
disconnect from Sidecar using the disconnect button. If the app you’re working in
has Touch Bar controls, you’ll find a set of tools on
the bottom of your iPad screen, even if your Mac
does not have a Touch Bar. These tools will change
depending on the app. Click or tap
any of these buttons to activate that feature
on your iPad. And that’s how to get started
with Sidecar. Now you’ll have
an extra display at the ready. For more productivity tips, subscribe to

  1. now I sat 1 hour in front of my Mac watching it update to Catalina only to realize that I cannot use sidecar with my sisters iPad. Thanks for literally nothing apple.

  2. No devices in sidecar menu… and airplay is not displayed mac pro16 Catalina, iPad mini 4 on ipados 13.1

  3. Why My MacBook Air (2017) doesn't compatible with this sidecar feature?
    https://www.cultofmac.com/629666/only-a-small-number-of-macs-will-support-sidecar-in-macos-catalina/

  4. bullshit my 2015/16 macbook air wont work with it. No need to upgrade then. Guess ill be buying a windows computer next.

  5. How will the battery life of the MacBook battery life be affected when using sidecar in wired mode without plugging mac to power outlet (lets say while traveling) since the MacBook Pro will be charging the IPad’s battery while in use in that mode. Or Simply put; what effect will Charging the IPad with the mac have on the Macs battery life when the Mac is not connected to power but is connected to the iPad and is charging the iPad while using wired connection m?

  6. why the fuck do we need an apple pencil device for it to work, i bought my ipad in 2017, there was an ipad pro model with apple pencil support that year but i dont need it, why is a pencil necessary for the system to have another screen

  7. Have an iPadPro 2017, wifi and bluetooth connected, logged into the same iCloud account as iCloud on iMac. On the iMac no iPad Pro shows up under Airplay.

  8. I'm not getting my iPad to pop up. Its a 12.9 inch iPad and a late 2017 MacBook Pro. Both are updated and its still not showing up…help

  9. I have a 2017 2nd gen iPad Pro and a mid 2015 MacBook Pro (maxed everything) and no sidecar? They sure can handle it! Why don’t you widen the compatibility to these machines as well? It used to work with Catalina beta , now not! Shame!

  10. Pleeeease let me use touch as a cursor. It's inconvenient to scroll with fingers and point with the pencil in the same hand. Let me use my darn hands!!

  11. I don't see my iPad on the airplay menu, same wifi and Bluetooth is on. I have 12.9 iPad pro 2nd gen and latest mac 2019

  12. hahahaha +2016 for hardware… This is clearly Apples way of making everyone upgrade for a NEW feature YOU MUST HAVE!
If you don't want to spend + $3000 for mbp and $1000 for ipad pro just get an app like Duet, AirDisplay or Astropad. You don't need to have the latest hardware to do this, Apple is just trying to get your money. If all the Apps I listed can do it on our old hardware then the only reason Apple doesn't support us is $$$, greedy, greedy, greedy.

  13. I want to use my iPad as a monitor in my car. And I want to be able to screen mirror my phone for YouTube and movies and web search but don’t want to have to use my hotspot or activate cellular data on my iPad.

  14. با سلام لطفا طریقه اتصال گوشی با کابل USB به نمایشگر رو توضیح دهید

  15. Please make it work for devices that are on different networks. Right now Sidecar doesn’t work if the Mac and the iPad are on two different Wi-Fi networks.

  16. Не могу связать MacBook Pro 2015 и iPad mini 5???
Добавьте поддержку! Tолько ради этого обновил Mac. Чувствую себя злым на Apple!

  17. Apple – You fucking piece of shites! My MacBook Pro 2015 is completely capable of running this shit yet they did not give me this feature. Fuck You!

  18. I have a macbook air released in 2017 and an ipad compatible with apple pencil and still I can’t use this feature. Really?

  19. Not gonna lie I feel like traveling with a 13“ MacBook Pro and an 12.9“ iPad Pro would be amazing for productivity!

  20. I have a Mac book air 2017 and I can’t seem to get the AirPlay on the menu bar at the top of the screen. Does anyone know how to fix this?

  21. Anyone else kind of annoyed that their 2015 (or earlier) MacBook Pro cannot run Sidecar, yet runs Catalina just fine?

  22. The only reason I was so excited for this upgrade was this feature; and I now I discover that its not compatible with my expensive MacBook Air that I bought less than 2 years ago (JAN 2018).
ITS NONSENSE TO HAVE TO CHANGE MY VERY EXPENSIVE GADGETS EVERY COUPLE OF YEARS JUST TO GET THE NEW FEATURES. THOUGH I HAVE BEEN AN APPLE FAN SINCE EVER AND ALWAYS HAVE THE LATEST GADGETS(YOU CAN CHECK MY Apple ID WITH HOW MANY DEVICES I HAD OVER THE YEARS), BUT HONESTLY NOW I AM SICK OF THIS SH**T.
APPLE YOU BETTER GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER OR I AM SWITCHING TO A BETTER PROVIDER

  23. I just bought the new iPad air a day before the new software was launch. and I'm pretty upset that it did not support my macbook pro mid 2015 :/

  24. I’m logged into the same I cloud account, same WiFi, Bluetooth is turned on and I updated my Mac 2017 and iPad Pro 2017. Keep getting the message that my the Mac can not connect to the iPad. Anybody any idea how to fix this?

  25. 10 min ago I upgraded to Catalina for this feature only! and now I learned this doesn't work on my MacBook Pro because its too old? why? why? why??? please enable this feature for all models what can run Catalina!

  26. I'd love it… if it worked. I have a 2017 MacBook Pro. Sidecar lags, YouTube only. plays sound as the video freezes, things moved across vanish etc etc. Drawing is worse with stutter and terrible pressure sensitivity in photoshop.

Nice idea but…. wow. Terrible implementation and sort of surprised more people aren't commenting on that.

  27. I'm not even able to update to Catalina. this ''Could not create a preboot volume for APFS install'' error is killing me. can anyone HELP please?😭
