Dean: So what you’re watching is a wild Martin Garrix trying to plug in his charger with one leg. Martijn: So today we’re going to lay down the guitars and the first rough version of the vocal with dean. His voice is a little bit, not damaged, but he had a very hectic tour right before it came to Amsterdam. Dean: Yeah I have been stressing about this, when I talk so much it kind of wrecks me But it was like one of those days were just like it sounds good and the ideas are
flowing that we just like kept going. But I’m yeah it’ll be fine man I’m used to it. Martijn: So we might want to save his voice
today and then record properly tomorrow so we’re gonna first lay down the
guitars do the verses because they’re low and then the hook is very high, so we’ll
see how it goes but very excited. Oohh torture as a DJ. Like Dean his voice he has a huge range but this song is basically gymnastics for a singer, which is amazing but I feel like this key will match perfectly. This guy is beautiful.
Dean: I was just singing the bathroom and it’s like… Just… Yeah it’s gonna be sick. Yeah it’s like pushing it, but it sounds a bit like I could imagine, like Chris Martin, like the
kind of push down you know what I mean. Won’t be as nice as his, but it will be nice. It would be so cool it coming in here, just subtly like quiet you know. Oh then it’s going to drop out or just keep going? Martijn: We can drop it there, we can build it up. Dean: Yeah and then bring it back, cool.
Martijn: But I love it, we should record that right now. One sec, I have to rendering the new … aahhhh I’m an idiot, I closed my laptop, opened it and my skin was in between. Yeah I lifted my feet up and I fell on my elbows. Well I’m an idiot I put the pillow on this thing and put my foot…
Eelco: How are you feeling? Martijn: Yeah it’s okay. It didn’t go into like a weird place.
Eelco: Be careful man. Dean: Are you good bro?
Martijn: Yeah yeah Dean: Was everything alright?
Martijn: I landed on my back, right when I fell I lifted my foot up. This is the Big Sky, this is f*cking so sick…
Wait. The reverb! Dean: It’s f*cking magic! Oh, can you hear me? Cool. We have it. Dean: Some good stuff in there, good shit.
Really good shit, yeah boy! Martijn: Cool okay, if you could send me all this stuff. Dean: We put some guitars down and now I have to go and sing and the song is so high and I
usually can sing very high but this is very very very high… Fingers crossed. There you go bro, I’m your doorman. Albin: You sound exactly like that though when singing this verse so it’s fine. Dean: Yeah that’s what’s cool about it, I haven’t done a song this low in the verse since that, I don’t think. Which is good Albin: Just do your thing. Martijn: Repeat.
Dean: Let’s do that again. Martijn: Perfect, that’s the take. Not that one. Albin: Let’s mark that one, that was magical. Every song is a unique
like process in the recording part of it. It also depends a lot on the song
and sometimes the singer’s very great like technically, like it can get a
melody perfectly but as zero emotion. What’s great about Dean’s voice is that he
has that like storytelling ability that a lot of singers don’t have naturally. Martijn: That was f*cking perfect. That ending we could put after another … Albin: Good first half.
Martijn: No first half was good, but first half from the second line, that was sick!
Dean: You want more of those? Martijn: No, that was perfect we got it. The “If I could I” was also some really sick.
Dean: Yeah I’ll try to throw a little one in. I always think like, you leave it all here, like my voice is fucked but if it sounds amazing it’s worth it so… Usually I would protect my voice but now I’m just like whatever, cuz it’s a recording, it’s everything. Martijn: That was sick, when you push it’s nice. it’s perfect. Perfect, we have it. We can make it work.
So sick! Albin: I love how you do the “a little more time”. Dean: The way we shaped the phrasing is just, warm hug dude. Albin: Yeah exactly. Dean: But I basically got it in one take. You know what I mean, it’s just like I get these things quite easily you know. You know when you feel like you got it, I just got it you know what I mean. No, no but honestly…
Martijn: Today was great, I’m proud of this guy! Dean: Let’s f*cking go, we got there in the end. Nah it was funny, it was an awesome day It was like tough, but it’s good, you got to get it so and you know what… Tomorrow I have no voice, that’s alright, that’s fine. Martijn: That’s sick! We should start it somewhere there, it’s so vibey. Starts like a f*cking anthem! Dean: You know when something is coming! Martijn: Should we start with the bridge? and what I think is we do should do the
high and the low octave. Dean: It sounds so epic, we came back in and it’s so high, the line “Yeah give me
a moment I need” just to reach that I had to push really hard, but it sounds too pushed and it sounds a bit forced. So we’re trying to either get it now and what time is it? It’s 12:13 so it’s still very early we only woke up like two hours ago. Albin: Sick,
Martijn: Yes that’s it! That was it! Albin: That was crazy! Give that two exclamation marks.
Rob: Yes exactly! Martijn: We have it! Albin: Amazing, that was sick! So sick! Dean: Yeah boys!
Albin: Good job man! Dean: Let’s f*cking go!
Martijn: You’re the man! Dean: You’re the fucking man, that’s sick!
Sorry if I hit your leg. Oh dude legendary!
F*ck I was getting like the hair standing up. It’s such a good bridge, like it keeps it going.
Martijn: And then it goes back, one more drop so people will be like, what the f*ck.
Dean: This keeps going. Albin: Amazing! Martijn: You’re the man!
Dean: F*cking legendary, that’s three days man! Martijn: I’ll come to the Utrecht show.
Dean: Oh you’re coming to the show in Utrecht? Albin: Yeah I’ll come too.
Dean: Awesome, awesome let’s bring it in! Martijn: It’s just half an hour drive. the other one was two hours. Dean: No dude, totally man! Martijn: Today we’ll focus on the song and everything it’s going to be f*cking sick! Dean: Dude it’s going to be f*cking awesome! Rob, thank you for everything. I didn’t know what to expect I was actually really nervous about it cuz I’ve never done
something like this before. Yeah it was weird like got this jumbled, demo ideas
and stuff like that. Threw my own lyrics on and we kept workshopping
them and then we worked on this bridge and then just came in
some things a million times changing notes, that I’m not used to, but it turned out so really, really good. It sounds awesome, so I’m pumped. Oh by the way, the most inspiring three days man, like the way you guys operate it’s next level there’s no no doubt why you’re here man. It’s like, you know, it makes sense. Martijn: Same to you guys!
Dean: It was f*cking legendary, see you next week!
