Lil Nas X’s “Panini” Explained | Song Stories

[HOST] Lil Nas X releases the futuristic music
video for “Panini,” a song that is definitely not about a quote “damn sandwich.” [HOST] “Panini” is produced by Dot Da
Genius & Take a Day Trip with a music video directed by Mike Diva. [HOST] On the track, Lil Nas X likens his
music career to the cartoon “Chowder,” and how the main character of the same name
had to continually fend off love from a girl named Panini. PANINI: Hi, Chowder CHOWDER: I’m not your boyfriend!! Hey, are those cookies? PANINI: I made them for you! CHOWDER: Thanks! PANINI: No, problem. It’s what girlfriends do. [HOST] In a Genius annotation, Nas explained
the career metaphor saying quote. [HOST] Panini was possessive over Chowder
in the show. She’s a representation of fans of who love
you when you’re small. Once you get the spotlight they aren’t feeling
you as much. [HOST] He adds to this in the second verse
while giving a nod to the record breaking chart success of his hit single “Old Town
Road.” [HOST] On the chorus, Nas X interpolates Nirvana’s “In Bloom,”off of 1991’s “Nevermind” a song where the band’s frontman Kurt Cobain pokes fun at their new fans after the popularity of 1989’s “Bleach.” [NAS] The craziest things about ‘Panini,’ is it
introduced me to Nirvana’s album ‘Nevermind.’ And people was like, ‘Wow, he sampled Nirvana.’ I was like, no. It’s like, I didn’t realize I was using
almost the exact same melody.” [HOST] Take A Day Trip told us that Nas X
put the song together relatively quickly. [DENZEL] He literally wrote the entire song
in his head and then the first time he stepped into the booth he just did the opening verse
like, “Hey Panini- [HOST] The music video, starring Skai Jackson,
appears to takes inspiration from the 1982 film Blade Runner set in an alternative future
of Los Angeles 2019. [HOST] In the flick, Nas X follows Jackson
around as she tries to escape him. [HOST] Fans couldn’t wait for this music
video and had plenty of comical responses online. This seems to prove that there is more in store
from Lil Nas X. [HOST] If you want to learn more about “Panini,”
