Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, World War II It was 1942, when my monotonous life was disrupted by an unexpected encounter. Still today, it gives me the shivers when I remember the gaze of those two pairs of eyes. Until that moment, I had never realized which side was in fact the evil one. Can I help you? František! Come on in! Thank you for letting me stay here. I’m really sorry… I’m glad to see you again, Antonín. Me too. It’s quite small in here. In these times, I should be happy to have any shelter at all. Anyway, I will sleep here and you can stay in my room. This is your room? No, no, that’s just the closet. A lot of rubbish and
some of my old writings. Your room is upstairs. How is Mom? She misses you. She told me you haven’t visited her in a while. May I? Of course I see you have changed
your opinion on smoking. I guess I needed something just for myself. After they took everything else
away from me. Writings? Are you writing anything new? I’ve started writing a story recently, but you know – publishing books is getting harder and harder. The demand is lower? Not really, people would like to read… But… it’s different now. I hope you’re not trying
to open people’s eyes. I’d like to. You know very well that you’re playing with fire. It’s not the first time. And this time, it could be much worse. You can’t just watch all
that is going on, and do nothing! It’s easier if you try to imagine that there is nothing horrible out there. So I should just listlessly sit here, while there are other – innocent people
being oppressed out there? You are still as ignorant as you used to be. That’s not ignoring. Neither you nor I know what’s really going on. Maybe it’s not as bad as you think. How can you even say that? After all that you’ve been through? After all that I’ve been through? You have no idea
what I’ve been through. You’ve got an apartment, a career… You could lead a simple life if you just controlled yourself a bit and did what you’re supposed to do. Do you have an idea what I would give up
for something like this? I guess you don’t… Sorry. Thanks for the shelter. With each new sunrise, I knew it will be
another day full of fear. I did not worry about myself. I worried about the fate of those who had to hide. The fate of those marked with the yellow badge. František? František? Have you seen my matches? Yes… I borrowed them. Do you have them? I do. I, František Hájek, hereby inform that Antonín Hájek, born on… residing in… … creates, at this address,
literature which sympathizes with Jews and incites to… Can you tell me what this is about? And how did you even find this text? So that’s why you moved to my place? To snitch on me?! They’ve picked you out ages ago. If it weren’t me, it would have been someone else… You can’t be serious?! Why the hell are you doing this? They didn’t give me any other choice. They didn’t? Why didn’t you oppose them? I’m your brother! Oppose? How would you imagine that then? Should I also start writing
some tall stories? Wake up… It’s just words on a paper. They will never save anyone. At least I’m doing something! I would really like to
see you in my shoes… I’d like to know what you would do if the life
of someone from the family depended on it?! I am your family! You? I haven’t heard
from you for years! Is that what you call a family? Goodbye. More and more often, I was thinking
about all the consequences my actions might have. But I was unable to live differently. I had no choice but to hope that all of this wasn’t coming to an end. It’s just words on a paper… Do you remember the old days when —always before bedtime— Mom would sing our favorite lullaby? I hope you still recall its rhythm?. We could never get it out of our heads. You might want to tap it sometimes… LULLABY directed, written and edited by;
