Vaddaraadhaka (Kannada) – Official Short Film [With English Subtitles] | Aneesh S Sharma

Buy your tickets! You there. Where do
you want the ticket to? What happened dude?
Why are you sulking? This morning, there was a
huge ruckus in my place! “The PUC results are out. Go
check if you’ve passed the exams!” …was all they blabbered! I know that I’ve
failed in the exams! Unlike the rest of the world which
writes an exam to pass with good marks.. I write mine to fail in them! And not just this year. I failed last
year and and the year before that! Here’s what happened!
I was on my way to check the results.. And on my way, I came
across Seetharama grandpa! He asked me to get some batteries.
I agreed to it. As I moved a little ahead.
I came across sister Girija! She asked for two kilos ofKadale Bele
(Bengal gram) and gave me the money for it. And then it was our Neelakanta Shastri.
The priest of our temple.. I met him too. He wanted to buy a ticket for
Bengaluru and asked me to get it done. Paid for it! Now, tell me this! Should I go and check the
results of my failed exams… ..or go to the town and
get all this work done? My village is a tiny one! And only one bus commutes to our village.
The one I just came in! The same bus goes back
to my village at 2 P.M. You see, if I don’t return in that bus,
there’s no other bus until evening! Now tell me! Should I go and check out the results
of an exam I’ve failed for sure? Or should I get the jobs of the
oldies from my village done? Brother, give me two
batteries for the radio! These batteries are
for our Seetharamajja! *RADIO CRACKLES*
This is Seetharamajja! Seetharamajja is an
honorable man in our village! Honorable for his age,
wisdom and everything else! He’s considered as an
elder in everything. Our Seetharamajja
loves the radio! While all of us grew up
watching movies and cricket… Seetharamajja never watched anything,
instead he grew up listening to the world! He doesn’t feel happy when
he hears songs just anywhere. But when he hears them from
his radio, he feels elated! Everyone in the village
now, has a Television set! So does Seetharamajja.
He got one from America! But then, he still doesn’t
like to watch Television. The joy he gets from the
sound of the radio crackling.. inexplicable! Seetharamajja is an
amazing hard worker! He has worked hard
to lead his life! An excellent agriculturist too! *RADIO ANNOUNCEMENT CONTINUES* And not just in the
last two years.. For over the last decade,
he is the farmer who… …has harvested the most produce
in the village! Our Seetharamajja! He has a son! In the USA. He worked hard to
get his son educated. His son too studied well and
grew up to become highly educated! He had come down
a few years ago! Living in America,
far away from home. He decided to remain away too! On his way here, he had bought a
Television for his parents to watch! But Seetharamajja didn’t
even bother to open the box! It doesn’t mean that he
can’t watch Television. Just that he can’t
survive without the radio! Here’s a fact! His educated son from America might
get a TV set nobody asked for… But to get the
necessary batteries,… will need a college
failure like me, right? My concern is.. Just
because I got educated… …and grew tall in the
eyes of the society,.. How right is it of
me to ask my elders.. …to let go of
their ways of life? *RADIO NEWS CONTINUES* Brother, give me three
kilograms ofKadale Bele! Do you remember who the Kadale
Bele was for? Girijakka! Girijakka is an excellent artist! When I was young, she would
conduct music kutcherys! I remember it well! And for the last decade..
Ever since her husband died!.. Her harmonium, her music and she herself
never left the four walls of her house! Girijakka’s son borrowed
loans from everyone in.. …the village and took
off without repaying it! There’s rumors that he’s
a driver in Bengaluru now! Poor Girijakka! Poor woman repaid all
the loans her son took.. …while running the
house all by herself! And to live alone in a secluded region
like Malenad, is a herculean task! But our Girijakka not only
made a life for herself,.. …but also built an
arecanut farm all by herself! And not just in the fields.. You know the government
school in the village, right? Girijakka works there too! To cook mid-day meals! Only one thing bothers me! I always wonder when the
government school in our village.. …will shut down leaving
Girijakka with no work to do. Because the government school in
our village has only four kids! When the youth have left the village,
where will the toddlers come from? Right? It’s Summer now!
The schools are closed. So Girijakka has no work to go to. In the meantime, she prepares Holige (Sweet
flat breads) for festivals and sells them. Sadly, her son is not around
to get her anyKadale Bele. And now, I’ll have to book a
ticket from Sagara to Bengaluru. This ticket is for Neelakanta Shastri! Tch! Poor Neelakanta Shastri! He is the priest of our village
and also of the only temple! Our Neelakanta Shastri has been serving
the God everyday for the last 36 years! His father too was a priest. Something
I’ve heard my father telling. His entire lineage is that of priesthood. He has land that was given by
the Keladi kings as inheritance. He is leading his life with
the help of that very land. He has a son who lives in Bengaluru. Neelakanta Shastri worked
hard to get his son educated. His son studied well.
But his only disappointment.. …is that unlike the rest
who flew to the USA or the UK. He moved close by, to Bengaluru. Our Shastri’s dream is to build a
resort in the land he inherited. How will Neelakanta
Shastri let go of.. …memories associated
with his entire lineage? Don’t you agree? His son has now apparently filed
a case in the High Court… …demanding that the land
ownership be transferred to him. To attend the trial, Neelakanta
Shastri has to go to Bengaluru! And for him to go to Bengaluru, a
board exam failure like me has to help! When an entire life has been
spent in the same nest,.. …how will an aged bird
spread its wings and fly away? I also wish to get
educated and prosper. But like the other prosperous men,
I don’t wish to leave the village! What do you say? When someone needs batteries,
groceries and their tickets booked… I’m here. A PUC exam failure! Few days ago, Subbaraya from the
neighbouring village had called.. …asking for my help to move the body of a
deceased person as there was no one around! Everyone passed their
exams and prospered.. And now, there’s no one
left to lift the dead! Malenadu has turned into an old aged home!
