When Was America Great?: The Daily Show

– So, when was
America last great? – For me, I would say the
turning point for our country was 1913, when we passed
the 17th Amendment. It was the– – So like, back when
women couldn’t vote? Yeah, well, back up, but again– – That’s kind of your
sweet spot, right there? – Absolutely, but 1913. – What year was America great? – When it was founded. – Except for the slavery stuff. – Except for the
slavery stuff, you know? – I think we were
probably our strongest immediately post-World War II. – So, around the 1950s? – Eh, mid-’40s, ’50s. – Yeah, I think
the ’50s was great, other than, you know,
segregation and women’s rights– – Look, look, we can sit here and paint negative faces
of all times in America. – Correct. – It’s “make American
great again.” So, when was it last great? – It’s always been great. – So if it’s always been great, what are we trying
to go back to? – We’re not going back.
We’re going forward. – Well, I guess the
’80s were pretty good. – All right, the ’80s. – The ’80s, great music, great– – Crack cocaine. – Crack cocaine. – Yeah. – Well, we’re always great.
The people are great, but– – So– – Yeah. – So America is great
right now. So we did it. – No, we didn’t do it. – America became great
when the founding fathers put pen on paper
in 1776 and decided to build a country
based on laws. That was greatness. – That was awesome. Other than the slavery,
obviously, that was totally– – We did have that, yeah. We did have that, and
the Indian thing, right? – That was terrible, and
the women’s voting thing… But other than that,
that was awesome. – A few hiccups along
the way, you know. Like they say, nobody
made it to the top without breaking a
few pieces of china. That wasn’t an
insult, by the way. (upbeat music) – Hey there, thanks

  2. The concept of america is great just like the concept of communism is great: on paper. Unfortunately people are involved and people are seldom great.

  3. I think slavery was pretty common place all over the world when the country was founded. Ii have heard the u.s. was the first to abolish it. The world was different then back when life was cheap and people weren't so soft..

  4. Soo Idiots all one ,, Their Don’t Know was Great Russian President & Trumped Puppet πŸ‡·πŸ‡Ί πŸ‡·πŸ‡Ί

  5. America has always been great because any ass can challenge a president, demanding his birth certificate. Try that in Russia, Donny ,or China or N. Korea ,you would disappear.

  6. More, we need more of these questions cause I would like to know that answer cause I'm confused as to what period they are using as a comparison.

  7. Well from a pure economic and geopolitical point of view the 50s truly were the peak if US power. Military wise the soviet union overshadowed everything until the US got the nuke

  8. Ok, by this logic, what country is ever great. Oh China was great except Mao, India was great except Caste System, Mexico was great except Cartels. You can find good and bad stuff about every civilization.

  9. America miss the opportunity to be great when they freed the Slaves thay didn't rite away give the slaves the very best education at the time , WHAT WOULD THIS COUNTRY LOOK LIKE TODAY?

  10. These are the deplorable, uneducated, racist bigoted, homophobic misogynist, ill informed, unread and gun loving lunatics. Scary and sad.

  11. Is the last part staged or what…ROFL as a Chinese watching it especially it’s Ronny I know he is Chinese from Malaysia and I like him so much lol

  12. Watching from Australia. One person = one vote. Free medical.
(Australia just named the richest country in the world).
Democracy is fun. Try it some time! #BernieAbrams2020

  13. America was never great…it has a been a shit work in progress…with all the inhumanity and genocide included. Fuck this country

  14. 1:48 πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ’€

  15. That last line just wrote itself. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚
Nobody ah made it to the top without breaking a few pieces of China. That wasn’t an insult by the way.

  16. The 1970s were very good.
The American people had (for the first time in history) managed to force the U.S. government to end its part in a futile war, the federal minimum wage was increased, African-Americans were experiencing a boom in upward mobility (although that would change, with Nixon's passage of the Welfare Act), the women's movement finally came to fruition, with (among other landmark legal decisions) Roe Vs. Wade, and a generation of girls finally had strong female roles models staring in their own shows, all over TV (Wonder Woman, the Bionic Woman, Charlie's Angels, even Lady Cop), Native-American activists organized and made progress as well (AIM actually occupied Alcatraz island for about a month), NASA was still sending people to the moon, the first Earth Day was celebrated, Star Wars premiered, Star Trek found new life in syndication, Stonewall kicked off the birth of the gay-rights movement, AIDS hadn't yet reached the U.S., rock music continued to mature, and branch out; creating new music genres such as Reggae, Punk, and yes, even Disco, global-warming hadn't yet become irreversible, and there were 3-4 billion fewer people on the planet.

The 1990s were pretty good, as well.

  17. Before it was considered offensive (or even racist) to admit that America was great. And back when people understood that this didn't mean perfect.

  18. It was never great !! It could have been !!! If thay kept there word about giving the Slaves some land and a mule and the best education at that time maybe would have turned out differently and also every treaty thay had with the natives American thay never honored ONE not even one dam one so great ? HELL NO

  19. We have a form of government that has allowed us to overcome slavery and grant rights to the weak. We built the most economically powerful nation on earth, with a standard of living that exceeds nearly every country. What other government are we comparing ourselves to that democrats consider our country such a failure? No other government has allowed such freedom to exist. The governments that fool people into thinking they are granting them special rights like universal health care, are actually convincing them that the government is the owner and dispenser of all rights, and we are its subjects. That's not freedom.

  20. So lemme ask black people then. How would you be doing right now if your ancestors hadn't been enslaved? Where do you reckon you would be sitting right now?

  21. America is great when we the people stopped the tyrants of WWI. We the people stood to gather and saved the WHOLE world from the tyranny of the Nazi fascist party. Now this Nazi fascist has taken over the Democratic anti-American party that spreads hate and separation. Not to worry, we the people will crush them again and it starts with Trump and all who love our Father in heaven.

  22. Actually America was at it's greatest before the "white skinned dicks" fucked it…especially the English speaking ones. They have been the root of all evil in the world.

  23. For me.."Make America Great Again" is bringing back job, employers from overseas, values (Re-evaluating the PC b.s.) and much of what past presidents seem to destroy what made American great. Not so much a particular time frame, but what made America the land of the free and the home of the brave!

  24. Lol at 2:13 this man admits the wrong and minimizes slavery and the massacre of Native Americans as "hiccups along the way". This is why I have a problem with people who ignore issues.

  25. An an immigrant who came to this wonderful country, it has been great to us ..always. Came here with $1k in my pocket, now I have a house, car and a job. Was this given to me? Answer :No
People of color has always propagated the narrative of racism, systematic suppression and unfairness. All you need to do is work hard and stop shifting blame on the Caucasian community. If someone who doesn’t speak the language, with no money and no connection comes to this country and makes something out of his life.. what does this tell you this country… that it has been always GREAT!!

  26. I think america was great until george bush sr. And then it went straight downhill with jr and than the collapse of the empire started in 2010 with Citizens United.

  27. The answer is; it was more great at one time than now for many, probably most. The ghetto neighborhoods that are ghetto now, were once nice new communities. You didn't hear about kids being kidnapped, raped and murdered so often, kids weren't killing people as often as now, there wasn't as big of a problem with homelessness, aids, hvc, no people tampering with medicine, food and drink products in stores, there wasn't mass shootings every week, etc. It started to get bad towards the late 60s with killer cults, then serial killers in the 70s, and so on. Each generation brought something new and bad, with nothing new and good. The things that were good had been around a while. Some are lost. Like kids being able to ride bikes in public and play in parks.

  28. America has always been great. The people hasn’t always been great. But! The American spirit has always been to create a better life for the people and we just do that with limited knowledge! In 50 years, we’ll look back on today and say β€œwow, I can’t believe people even thought that! How evil!” But guess what? We’re human. We can either focus on all the bad, or we can acknowledge the fact that America has always been a country of pressing forward in the face of adversity. I would recommend all of you to read the β€œAmerica: The Last Best Hope” books by William Bennett.

  29. Greatness depends on the individual's interpretation of history, doesn't depend on the opinion of a liberal or conservative.
