Why you NEED to be adjusting your PICTURE PROFILES!


– Welcome back! It’s
Tuesday, let’s do this. (rock music) Alright, today’s topic is dynamic range, shooting in LOG, and picture
profiles. What’s the best- (piano music) for you, and what’s going to give you the best picture and the best settings based on the camera that you have? So let’s throw two minutes
on the clock, let’s go. So what is a picture profile? Now all cameras ship at these predetermined picture styles, right? So if you’re shooting
landscape, it’s saying, “Hey, this is the best
settings for landscape. “This is the best for
portraits,” so on and so forth. Those picture profiles have
different settings within them that capture images differently. Now, what’s really popular,
I’m sure you’ve heard of it, is shooting your footage in a flat profile, something called LOG. I shoot Canon, so they call it C-Log. What does that mean? Well,
at first sight, it looks like this, and it doesn’t look the best. You might say, “Ugh, there’s
no contrast, no saturation, it’s like gray,” and
just that picture style is the best to shoot
on if you want the most cinematic looking footage,
because it’s exposing that picture, it’s
capturing that information: the light, the detail and the
shadows and the highlights better and more even than anything else. So shooting in a flat
profile basically means it’s capturing that image
at a higher dynamic range. Now, what is dynamic range? So picture this: when you
just go outside and you look at something,
doesn’t matter what it is, you see the shadows,
you see the highlights. Nothing is blown out, you
don’t step outside and go, “Hm, the sky looks blown
out today,” like you can see everything perfectly,
but cameras can’t, right? The dynamic range is only
so much on camera bodies that they have to choose:
Am I going to expose for the shadows, or the highlights? So if you expose for the highlights, then the shadows are too dark. If you expose for the
shadows, that you can see what’s in those shadows,
the sky’s blown out. Cameras with a higher
dynamic range and the ability to shoot in a LOG format
are going to to give you the best possible outcome to expose both the shadows and the highlights evenly. So yes, LOG footage does
look terrible when you’re shooting it in person: it’s
hard to kind of get focus, it’s a little difficult to see. However, when you’re grading it in post, there’s so much more information there, and the dynamic range is far superior from a DSLR or a mirrorless,
that that footage ends up looking so much better. The more dynamic range
that a camera can achieve, the more cinematic it’s going to look. That’s why these cinema
cameras are so expensive, because they’re able to
achieve a much higher dynamic range than our cellphones, than our DSLRs, than
our mirrorless cameras. So what if you say, “My
camera doesn’t have a LOG profile; how do I shoot it?” Well, all you gotta do is,
you can kind of fake your own. You can go into the picture styles and drop the saturation, drop the
contrast, drop the sharpness, and kind of create your own flat profile. That way, your camera’s
going to capture more of that detail in the sky, in the
shadows, so on and so forth, and then you can kind
of color grade that and bring it back to life in post. Just recently, I was at
Canon Canada, and they introduced LOG into the 5D Mark IV. They updated the firmware for me, and I can say it looks great. There’s just something
more cinematic about it, and being able to capture
that extra dynamic range in the detail in the sky and the shadows just makes for a more pleasing image. So if your camera can shoot in a LOG format, I recommend it. If it doesn’t, try to fake
it like we talked about. But that’s all for me today guys. I hope you liked this

Picture profiles is something that everyone needs. Thank you for putting alot of your thoughts and knowledge into your videos. today i took your advise and going to color grade in post.   4. Hey guys, I try to shoot as flat as possible bringing my sharpness all the way down… problem is, I dont know how to bring it back up again later in premiere, so my clips look way too soft… how do yo do that?

  5. LOG Picture Profiles do not increase dynamic range.
    They just store the information differently. This can make a difference, when there's not enough color resolution (bit depth) available or when there's too much compression.
    LOG gives more steps in shadow areas … however, those steps are taken away from the brighter areas.

  6. When you shoot in Log, how do you color correct to bring the colors back ? Is there a video Peter did on processing or color correcting log footage in post ? If so please could someone reply with the link to the video

    Peter i' m working dng photos shoot with log profile (flat footage) exported from kandao opsidian r 360 camera. As i imported them in camera raw it automatically colours the dng files. Is there any way to prevent this from happening or it is a unavoidable preset??

  8. Some video told me not to use log profiles since my camera is not a true log camera and it doesnt do any good when i shoot in log. Whaddya think? I have an entry level nikon d3200

  9. I honestly do not know why I am in university. I am, of course, not devaluing education and how lucky I am, but in 3 years I haven't been taught a single thing (I'm a film + media student). All I do is write essays on a lot of theory…. no practical, no technical. My uni is not the best haha. You have taught me SO MUCH! I wish I was paying YOU my tuition fees that I am seemingly throwing away to my university.

  10. shoot raw, use Logs, try Magic Lantern.. if you care about quality. Its just more.. (sometimes Xx More time to process).. but if quality matters than just .. RAW.

  12. I use flat profile for my shots. But at night at low light i think I gain much noise. I don't go over 800ISO. Is it possible this profile to affect my shots that way?

  13. He didn't mention banding at all. Banding can occur when shooting in log profiles and an improper exposure. Banding is basically what the background of every Unbox Therapy video looks like. Banding are the lines in between two colors that are very similar instead of a natural gradient. can look somewhat unprofessional.

  14. I assume this would be the same for pictures? So if I shoot in a log setting, I can revive it in a much more effective way in-post?

  15. Picture profile for photos? When I go to lightroom to edit the photos i took with a flat picture profile, LR automatically puts adobe standard profile

  21. hey Pete sorry I'm so late on this but how come when I chose 2 different picture profiles (and shoot them in raw) I pull them into Lightroom and they look literally the same? but if I go to the back of my camera and look I can see they look different, HELP

  23. My camera has a “flat” setting already in picture control. Would you recommend to shoot with this or shoot with a more custom setting trying to resemble log?

  25. Wow, this was enlightening. I've always loved the visual aesthetics of film (besides loving cinema in general), and have started getting into creating videos in DaVinci Resolve 16 – just basic stuff – but I love playing with grading and aiming for a more impressive look than actually comes out of my smartphone (like I said, just a beginner!). I really hope I might be able to apply this technique, although my smartphone is a lowly Huawei Nova Lite 3…I love learning, even if it's the hard wei…haha
